Located in the FBS Gallery, Lower Campus (15-25/1), an international fine arts workshop was held which was organized by the Fine Arts Education Study Program, FBS, Undiksha, in collaboration with the SYLT Foundation (Germany). This activity is one form of making Undiksha an International Home (Internationalitazion at home) which became the Undiksha movement this past year.

“All these activities were planned to invite me to a one-month residency in South Africa.” This was said by Vincent Chandra, a student from the Fine Arts Education Study Program who will graduate in March 2020. Vincent failed to go because of visa costs and the SYLT Foundation changed its policy to a workshop that was able to be attended by 17 students held in Indonesia.

The FBS Dean who opened the event emphasized that if students cannot go abroad, they can bring in experts from outside, such as the presence of Jaco Van Schakwyk, who is a lecturer or guest artist in this activity.

Jaco explained, “The main issue discussed practically in this workshop is improving capabilities of conceptual thinking among artists.” This is motivated by the imbalance between artistic technical skills and the thought concepts contained in works of art. “Conceptual thinking is very important in works of art because painting, for example, is a language,” Jaco said. According to Jaco, the quality or strength of a work of art is not just because it is beautiful because it is supported by the artist’s high technical skills but also by the conceptual thinking contained in it. “This is the significance of this activity,” Jaco said and did not forget to express his thanks to Undiksha, in this case, the FBS Dean’s leadership, who welcomed this activity very well.

This kind of workshop is very important and therefore must also be carried out by other study programs at FBS. From Vincent Chandra’s account, this activity seems to be more possible through personal relationships, at first, which are then institutionalized to contribute to Undiksha and FBS. It will also be more possible because there is a guarantee of funding assistance from institutions.

Furthermore, it is necessary to design a strategic model in the coming years for the implementation of making Undiksha an International Home, for example by facilitating networks developed by each lecturer, as has been done by the Coordinator of the Japanese Language Education Study Program.
